Nick was a Lead Solution Architect for the eDelivery part of HMRC. He was responsible for developing architectures for new projects and providing technical oversight during the project. This involved working with the customer, enterprise architects and all members of the project team to communicate the architecture and resolve technical issues.
As well as delivering projects as Lead Solution Architect Nick was responsible for assisting other architects in developing new work for the business unit.
Working closely with analysts and COBOL designers, Nick was primarily responsible for producing detailed designs in Rational Rose for Java developers. Nick was also involved in the production of prototype HTML screens for developers.
Once the main design phase was finished Nick moved onto the Java build which used Struts as the main framework.
Nick was a team leader responsible for designing, building and integrating an internally built insurance service with two third-party systems via EJB�s (WebSphere Advanced 3.5), XML/XSLT, JDBC and MQSeries. Other tasks included writing some of the core business logic for the application and writing an emulator for one of the third-party systems.
Nick was also responsible for the production of an EJB that interacted with Versant�s object database and writing a number of Swing-based tools to aid debugging and testing.
Nick developed a number of CORBA services in Java (Visibroker) for a distributed, multi-tier, Intranet-based suite of applications. He designed and implemented the security architecture for the suite based on Netscape�s Directory server and a role based security policy. Other tasks included the setting up of the Netscape Enterprise and Directory servers, Java servlet development, Server-side JavaScript and coordinating the efforts between the GUI and database designers.

Nick was the principal designer/developer on a project to develop a nuclear accident management and reporting system. Based on a distributed Lotus Domino service, the system was able to support initial e-mail alerts, information dissemination and document storage. This was a RAD project so a number of interim presentations were given to present progress and gain feedback. After the MOD used the system in a test accident they deployed the system nation-wide.
Nick designed and managed a Windows NT based Intranet server for two and a half years. Facilities available included Lotus Domino, Web and FTP services. The Lotus Domino service was web-enabled to allow individual users to search library services and modify user-specific data. It was also used to develop a knowledge management solution for a division of. The system was the first of its kind and was being deployed within the company.

Nick has developed a number of open source Java applications in his own time.
Nick developed the ConnectionPoolDataSource classes for the Firebird JDBC driver.
